Why does Myspace get such a bad rap when it comes to kids and online predators?

I was just reading over a few of the myspace Q%26amp;A's and I am wondering how so many people can really say that Myspace is to blame for kids being attacked by online pervs? Is it not the childrens parents who should be monitoring the computer time and telling their children what they should not and/or cannot view online while outside of the parents control (i.e. school)?

Parents tell their children about how smoking is bad for their lungs and drinking is not the "cool thing" to do, so isn't it so that parents also should tell their children of the dangers of the internet?

It's hilarious, really.

Predators exist EVERYWHERE. The store, the mall, school, EVERYWHERE. You have to keep an eye out. The problem is that Myspace (like Friendster before it, like yahoo/aol/icq before it, like IRC before it) just makes the whole "hunt down prey" thing easier.

You could sue Myspace into non-existence. The only thing that would happen is that Tom might get pissed (wait, no, Rupert would get pissed. Sorry.), but it wouldn't make a dent in the whole "onliine predator" thing.

You see, they're quite resourceful.

Sorry parents, I know it sucks, but you're just gonna have to:

1) monitor the kid's usage

2) tell them NO when they ask to go meet some dude that they chatted with online *by themselves*

3) get all up in their buisness (which isn't a bad idea anyway)

So, in closing, stop with the whole "We gotta save the children" routine and get back to being parents.

That, or we can just ban anyone below the age of consent from Myspace. Problem solved! :)

anyone can post anythng on that

Well there are a lot of pervs out there and they need to take steps to warn people so they do not get sued. That is how the world is now. You need to make things very clear, so even stupid people can understand. You always need to cover your a**, that is just the way it is.

I think now that all myspace profiles for children under 14 are private it should not be such a big deal...of course a child can lie and if they look mature enough they could be on it.

That's the problem parents do not monitor what their children do. The kids who did the Columbine thing made bombs and had hand guns in the basement and garage and the parents were oblivious!!! If parents were more hands on and became more interested in what their child were doing there would be alot less social problems where children are concerned.

Myspace can be very dangerous because kids think it is safe to put their full names, class schedules, school, hometown, pictures, blogs etc on it and it is very easy to just type in a high school and see all of the students who have a myspace, and then see all of their info.

I do believe that the parents should be better educating their children, telling them what they are and are not allowed to post online, as well as what types of websites they can visit, and who they may chat with (only people they actually know for instance)

Parents should but do not have a clue as to what sites kids use when they are on the computer. And, to make matters worse, they don't know where their kids are going when they leave the house or who their friends are. Parents believe they are giving their kids all this freedom...Kids want freedom and parents who care about what they are doing.

People want to put the blame on something they feel it out of their control. Parenting is hard and it is the American way to say nothing is our own fault.

It is just laziness in my opinion.

I'm a parent and my son loves My Space, and even though I check up on his activities, pervs still contact him. We have talked about the dangers, and thankfully we have a decent enough relationship that he tells me things when they happen. But not all kids can open up to their parents and it makes them vulnerable. You can criticize parent all you want but kids don't come with instruction manuals, and it's real easy for kids to fool parents. Think about all you got away with as a kid.
